Liberty Lake, WA, November 17, 2009 - Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced that Itron CEO Malcolm Unsworth has been elected to the Board of Governors of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) at the association’s annual meeting November 13th in Scottsdale, Arizona.
NEMA is the association of electrical and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity. NEMA members are leading the way in Smart Grid technologies by encouraging investment in the national electricity grid and developing new product standards. NEMA was named in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 as a participant in efforts to enhance the productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of the electricity grid.
Unsworth, a highly-respected executive both domestically and internationally, with broad experience throughout the utility industry, was named chief executive officer of Itron in March 2009 and has been a member of the board of directors since December 2008. Prior to his post as CEO, he was Itron’s president and chief operating officer. Unsworth joined Itron as senior vice president, Hardware Solutions, in July of 2004, when Itron acquired Schlumberger Electricity Metering and was promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer, Actaris, in April 2007 when Itron acquired Actaris Metering Systems.
While at Schlumberger, Unsworth spent 25 years in management and vice president-level positions, including 11 years associated with the electricity meter business. He was also vice president and general manager of Schlumberger’s North American operations, responsible for the CellNet division of the company and its water, electricity and gas products. Unsworth has a bachelor’s in mechanical and production engineering from Salford University in the United Kingdom and has earned the grade of Professional Engineer.
“I am honored to be elected to the Board of Governors within this respected association,” said Unsworth. “NEMA has been, and will continue to be, important to the electrical grid and its influence is particularly critical during this time of transformation within the electric utility industry.”
