OPPD Makes System Improvements

July 15, 2010 - The Omaha Public Power District is in the process of increasing the amount of carbon-free power it generates from its Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. At its meeting today, the OPPD Board of Directors authorized management to buy eight high-voltage circuit breakers, one of which is needed to help carry the increased amount of electricity coming from the plant when improvements are completed in 2012. The other breakers are needed for a project involving increased customer load and for the replacement of breakers that have reached the end of their service life.

The circuit breakers will handle 161,000 volts of power and will be installed in three substations, two in Douglas County and one in Washington County. The contract will go to Siemens Energy Inc. of Richland, Mississippi, for $631,480.

In other action, the board:

  • approved the Engineer’s Certification and authorized management to negotiate and award a contract for valve maintenance services during the 2011 and 2012 refueling outages at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station.
  • authorized management to offer for sale the former North Bend Office.
  • approved the 2010 labor contracts with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local Union No. 763 and No. 1483 and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (I.A.M. & A.W.) Lodge No. 31.
