National Arbor Day Foundation Recognizes Oncor as Tree Line USA Utility
Dallas, May 8, 2008 - Oncor has been recognized for the eighth straight year as a Tree Line USA Utility. The Texas Forest Service presented the award to Brenda Pulis, Oncor senior vice president of distribution, Debbie Boyle, Oncor senior director of environment, health, safety and training, Mark Moore, Oncor director of distribution services, and Ken Kinsey, Oncor vegetation management manager, at Veterans Park in El Paso, Texas on April 25. The award recognizes Oncor for its leadership in quality tree care practices, annual training in caring for trees, quality-trained employees and public education programs for 2007.
“Oncor is very pleased to again receive the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree Line USA Award,” Pulis said. “Oncor trims trees for safety and reliability reasons. With the recent series of spring storms in Oncor’s service area, the importance of proper tree pruning is becoming clearer every day. The Tree Line USA award is public recognition of Oncor’s commitment to protecting the environment while meeting our responsibilities to the public.”
Along with wildlife and lightning, trees are among the top three causes of outages on power lines in Texas. Oncor’s vegetation management work is designed to reduce the impact of future outages and ensure continued electric reliability. Trained foresters and certified arborists are key contributors to Oncor’s vegetation management team working on the largest electric delivery system in Texas, more than 116,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines.
Oncor also sponsors an education program called Know Before You Grow that raises awareness about planting the right trees near power lines and the need for regular pruning. Middle school-age youth compete in art contests to see who can best represent the safety and reliability lessons taught through Know Before You Grow.
