Electricity Operations has an opportunity for a Work Coordinator, Capital Engineering to join the Capital Engineering Team in Distribution.


In the role of the Work Coordinator, Capital Engineering you are accountable for the coordination, development and maintenance of the program plan and schedules.  The tasks include coordinating validation of design, determine resource loading (workload balancing), confirm supplies, schedule equipment, realign resources if daily priorities change, track budget and timelines for accuracy and confirm as builts are submitted.  Identify the need of additional internal or external resources to the other Work Coordinators or Contracts Resources in Distribution, Customer Connections and/or Distribution Operations by collaborating to balance work.


Two (2) permanent full-time positions are available.


Detailed Description:


The Work Coordinator, Capital Engineering is accountable to the Senior Manager and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the Senior Manager. The accountabilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing input to the Capital Engineering and Capital Construction plans and directions, and ensuring on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.
  • Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics that include budget, schedule, safety indicator, daily throughput, key constraints (equipment, supplies, resources) of all projects.
  • Reviewing specifications, drawings, and estimate requests to determine scope of work, material requirements and resource requirements.  Consulting with engineering, construction teams (aerial, underground and utility), Project Delivery Office, contractors and suppliers when necessary.
  • Coordinating activities for construction and commissioning of projects.
  • Liaising with Foremen, engineering and operations group for regular communication and feedback on work progress.
  • Providing direction to construction crews when necessary to address issues during construction. Consulting engineering resources when necessary.
  • Collecting and analyzing technical and other necessary information to propose solutions to project related issues before, during and after project activity.
  • Soliciting regular updates from field staff on project status and communicating progress with required stakeholders.
  • Monitoring resource loading to ensure they are being used optimally by working with foreman to set up work plans - Daily, Weekly, Monthly.
  • Regularly reporting project performance metrics as directed by the Senior Manager, Capital Engineering.
  • Coordinating close out of work orders and as-builts.
  • Identifying the need of additional internal resources to the Work Coordinator of Customer Connections and the Unscheduled Operations Teams or external resources to the Contracts Manager.
  • Liaising proactively with Project Specialists and Work Coordinators cross functionally in regards to scheduling concerns to rectifying and averting undesirable situations.
  • Monitoring volume of ready to schedule work and date sensitive jobs and identifying concerns to the Capital Engineering Senior Manager, Project Specialists and others involved.

successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of D&T Field Operations, gained through experience as an Engineer, Technologist, Journeyman, or other type of Utility employee.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in electrical distribution systems, including direct design or construction experience in Aerial and Underground Distribution systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of Aerial and Underground Distribution system:
    • Construction methods, procedures, work practices and techniques
    • Engineering standards, material specification and EDTI engineered guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and schedule and organize projects.
  • Knowledge of Project Management processes and procedures is a valuable asset.
  • Ability to:
    • Analyze complex construction issues, draw conclusions and develop a plan of action to address issues.
    • Understand project specifications and designs
    • Manage multiple projects and competing priorities
    • Understand budgets and report on project variances
  • Capable of reading construction drawings, analyzing construction issues and communicating requirements to operational staff.
  • High level of competency with computer software.  In particular: Microsoft Office, IVARA and experience with work management/project management software.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License with 6 or fewer demerits. A Driver's abstract will be required.
  • Clearance on a security background check, credit check and professional reference checks are required.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A copy of a valid work permit may be required.

The best candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to clearly communicate ideas in a manner that is appropriate to the audience addressing while maintaining a professional manner at all times.  To be successful in this role, you must possess proficient presentation skills and be comfortable using a variety of computer software programs to create and maintain various graphs, charts and reports. Jurisdiction: IBEW

Class: 8100 (TR4)

Wage: $51.08 per hour



Hours of work: 8.0 hours per day, 5 days a week between the hours of 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday.  However, in accordance with article 6.02 of the collective agreement, the work week may be any 5 consecutive days.
