Serves as the principal company spokesperson to the financial community (institutional investors, rating agencies, and media) and manage the stock transfer function. Manages the company's strategy development, capital structure, business ownership assessment, financial forecasting/budgeting and shareholder value assessment and be integrally involved in business acquisitions and divestitures. Responsible for annual consolidated company budgets and related scenario plans to determine estimated financial results and projections. Understands the company's strategies and financial results and projections and communicates them, within SEC disclosure guidelines, clearly and accurately to the financial community to enhance the company's access to the capital markets and to assure fair and full value for the company's stock. Acts as the conduit for feedback from the financial community on whether various company strategies are perceived to create shareholder value. Speaks on behalf of senior management, and particularly the company President and CEO to the investor base.

Fundamental Responsibilities

  • Manages the company's financial communications
  • Acts as the company's spokesperson to the financial community (institutional investors, rating agencies, and media):
    • answers analyst and media inquiries
    • prepares management speeches
    • arranges venues and talking points and slides for communicating messages to the financial community (financial community meetings (GAM and RAM), webcasts and conference calls)
    • makes presentations on behalf of senior management
    • manages the overall production of the Summary Annual Report to Shareholders
    • writes financial news releases
    • writes and produces communications to retail stockholders (Statistical Supplement and Utility Forecast and Quarterly Investor Update)
    • prepares the annual meeting presentation
    • prepares promotional materials and prepares the marketing strategy for any promotions of the company's dividend reinvestment and stock purchase plan or to raise common equity for company investments
    • writes copy for appropriate magazine ads
    • manages the HEI investor relations website (timeliness of postings of SEC documents to the website is the responsibility of the vice president, administration and/or the director, financial reporting and standards)
    • maintains the financial mailing list (FML)
  • Strategy and Budgeting
    • Works closely with subsidiaries to develop and refine strategic plans, including annual plan for Board of Director presentations
    • Assesses shareholder value enhancement strategies
    • Assesses capital structure to align with strategy
    • Works with outside consultants and bankers (where appropriate) to implement strategic changes to business mix, including any acquisition and divestiture plans
  • Department Management
    • Provides supervision, mentoring and performance evaluations for direct reports
    • Prepares and manages an annual plan and budget for the department
  • Updating Knowledge of Company and Message Development
  • Assists senior management in the development of the company's message to the financial community
    • responsible for earnings webcasts
    • keeps current on financial and material operating activities of the company
    • provides input from the financial community on whether current strategies and operations are perceived to create shareholder value
  • Targeting and Servicing Investors
    • Researches and identifies prospective investors whose investing profile matches the investment characteristics of the company
    • Establishes and cultivates relationships with target investors
    • Plans and manages annual shareholder meeting and related message development
    • Provides leadership and direction to shareholder services function
  • Stock and Investor Base Monitoring
    • prepares monthly investor relations report to management
    • corresponds with stock specialist re: stock price performance
    • monitors surveillance and earnings estimates reports to track stock performance and investor relations program performance

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of U. S. capital markets, particularly the stock market
  • Working knowledge of financial statements and financial analysis
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and word-processing, spreadsheet and database applications (preferably Word, Excel); technical or ability to develop quickly to technical level knowledge of graphics application (preferably Powerpoint)
  • Basic knowledge of internet for research purposes
  • Basic knowledge of SEC disclosure responsibilities

Skills Requirements:

  • Excellent listening skills to hear specific questions being asked or inferred by analysts and to understand subtleties in messages or tone of messages sought to be delivered by senior executives
  • Excellent writing, speaking, communication and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to build personal relationships with analysts and senior executives to facilitate business relationship
  • Ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Sensitivity to creative issues and ability to encourage creativity from designers and communications staff
  • Excellent organizational and team leadership skills
  • Good ability to budget and manage to budget

Experience Requirements:

  • Multiple years (7-10) of investor relations, strategic planning, financial analysis, capital markets or general business experience
  • Masters of Business Administration preferred
