Bruce Power supplies 30 per cent of Ontario's energy in 2013

January 9, 2014

Bruce Power provided 30 per cent of Ontario's electricity in 2013, a record for the company.

'By returning the Bruce site to its full potential with the return of four Bruce A units over the past decade, Bruce Power is now providing the majority of safe, affordable and carbon-free nuclear energy to Ontarians,' said Duncan Hawthorne, President and CEO. 'As we prepare to refurbish our remaining six units, we look forward to providing low-cost and clean power to the province for decades to come.'

Other operational highlights from 2013 include:

  • 59 - Per cent of Ontario's electricity generated by nuclear in the province - enough to power more than half of the province's schools, businesses, hospitals and homes.
  • 30 - Per cent of Ontario electricity generated by Bruce Power, up from 15 per cent in 2002.
  • $0.06 per kilowatt/hour (kWh) - Average price paid for electricity from Bruce Power nuclear in 2013 providing families and businesses stable, low-cost power. That's 25 per cent lower than the estimated average price.
  • $0.08 per kWh - Estimated average price paid for electricity in Ontario in 2013.
  • 15 million - Number of hours worked without a lost-time injury at Bruce Power thanks to a 'Safety First' focus, which was recognized by Ontario's Minister of Labour.
  • $450 million - Number of dollars invested by Bruce Power in the site's eight units in 2013. That's private investment in public assets.
  • 74 - Per cent of people in Ontario who support the refurbishment of the Bruce Power site, according to a poll by Ipsos-Reid.
  • 8,000 - Number of people who completed the Government's Long Term Energy Plan online survey, where nuclear received the most support as a supply source, followed by coal phase out.
  • 31 million - Tonnes of CO2 avoided in 2013 from Bruce Power's output, keeping Ontario's air clean. That's the same as taking six million cars off the road.
  • 70 per cent - Bruce Power's contribution to coal phase out through additional output added to the system since 2002. Nuclear Up. Coal Down.
  • $2 million - Amount of funds raised and contributed by Bruce Power, suppliers and employees for community initiatives and charitable causes in 2013.
  • 2040 - Bruce Power's vision for its role to 2040 and beyond to keep the air we breathe clean, create jobs, secure investment and keep electricity prices affordable and stable for families and businesses.
  • 6300 megawatts - Full output potential of the Bruce Power site, which was realized in 2013 and identified as a key plank in Ontario's revised Long-Term Energy Plan.

CEO Duncan Hawthorne will also be holding his annual town hall meeting to discuss company performance.  This year we are doing something new - all residents of Bruce, Grey and Huron counties will be invited to participate in a telephone town hall meeting.
