Duke Energy Foundation gives $75K for teacher grants in North Carolina

March 3, 2014

Duke Energy Foundation announced a $75,000 matching gift to DonorsChoose.org to assist teachers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

According to program guidelines, public school teachers can submit STEM project proposals to DonorsChoose.org, where anyone can choose to help fund the project. When 50 percent of a project's request is funded through citizen donations, Duke Energy will contribute the remaining 50 percent for teachers in the company's North Carolina service areas.

"We are so grateful for the continued support of Duke Energy. The company has been supporting public school classrooms in North Carolina through DonorsChoose.org since 2006, making them one of our most faithful supporters," said Dan Blum, director of partnerships and business development, DonorsChoose.org. "This spring, we anticipate this grant to support more than 250 classrooms, helping in excess of 6,500 North Carolina students receive the STEM materials they need to learn and thrive."

"Getting STEM resources directly into the hands of students is one of the best ways to begin a life-long interest in STEM industries," said Paul Newton, Duke Energy's state president - North Carolina. "We appreciate the great work educators undertake preparing students for STEM careers."

Teachers should visit www.DonorsChoose.org/teachers to submit a project. Qualifying projects already posted to the site will automatically be eligible for Duke Energy's matching funds beginning March 3.
