Live Video of Falcons Nesting at MidAmerican Energy's Davenport Building Is Available Online

April 23, 2014

Scorpio and P/D, a pair of nesting Peregrine falcons at MidAmerican Energy Company's Davenport, Iowa, building, can once again be viewed online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through live streaming video.

Since 2003, Scorpio and P/D have raised 15 young outside a 10th floor window at MidAmerican Energy's 106 E. Second St. office. So far this year, there are four eggs in their nest. The eggs are expected to hatch in early May. Live video can be viewed on the WQAD News 8 website at www.wqad.com/falcon-cam.

This marks the third year of the partnership between MidAmerican Energy and WQAD News 8 to offer live video to the public. In previous years, MidAmerican Energy and WQAD News 8 offered still images online of the falcons during nesting season.

After the eggs hatch, the falcons will be banded by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) so the falcons' progress can be monitored as they grow.

Scorpio, the female, was released at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., as part of a wildlife recovery program, and P/D, the male, was released in Lansing, Iowa, as part of a program to reintroduce Peregrine falcons to the state. Bridge construction forced the pair from their original home on Centennial Bridge in Davenport, but when the Iowa Department of Natural Resources installed a nesting box at MidAmerican Energy's building, the falcons immediately claimed it as their home.

Pat Schlarbaum, Natural Resource Tech for IDNR, has been thrilled with the partnership with MidAmerican Energy. 'The MidAmerican Energy partnership has been phenomenal when it comes to Peregrine falcons on the Mississippi flyway. MidAmerican contributions helped return falcons to historic cliff nesting ledges and alcoves in northeast Iowa.'

Guided by its environmental RESPECT policy, MidAmerican Energy is dedicated to making sure natural resources and habitats are protected. The falcon program is just one aspect of the company's commitment to protecting and respecting the environment for the benefit of future generations.

MidAmerican Energy will issue updates on the falcons via the company's Twitter and Facebook pages, which can be accessed from MidAmerican Energy's website at www.midamericanenergy.com.
