JCP&L Upgrading Manalapan Substation to Enhance Service Reliability in Monmouth County

May 5, 2014

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance customer service reliability, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is installing a massive new circuit breaker and transformer as part of a $1.2 million upgrade project at its Manalapan Substation. The 230 kilovolt (kV) circuit breaker, measuring 15 feet tall and weighing about 5 tons, will help limit the frequency and duration of power outages and meet the increased demand for electricity in the Monmouth County area.

The project also includes adding two new distribution circuits from the Manalapan Substation that will provide greater resiliency for JCP&L customers in the Manalapan and Millstone Township areas. The circuit work includes adding new crossarms, fuses, and transformers on existing poles, along with installing protective equipment such as animal guards and lightning arrestors.

"The new equipment allows us to switch circuits quickly should an interruption occur, while the new substation circuit breaker and transformer help make the local and regional transmission system stronger," said Anthony Hurley, JCP&L vice president of Operations.

This project is part of JCP&L's previously announced $251 million infrastructure investment in 2014 and is one of several included in JCP&L's "Energizing the Future" initiative to expand and enhance its transmission system in northern and central New Jersey to provide better service reliability for customers.
