Ohio Edison continues to conduct tree trimming work in communities across its 36-county service area in Ohio as part of its ongoing efforts to help enhance service reliability.
Since the beginning of the year, Ohio Edison tree contractors have trimmed more than 1,500 circuit miles of electric lines as part of its approximately $18.6 million vegetation management spend for 2014, with an additional 3,400 miles expected to be completed by year end. The work is done to help maintain proper clearances around electrical equipment and help protect against tree-related outages.
Ohio Edison's tree trimming program includes more than $800,000 for the removal of trees endangered by the Emerald Ash Borer. Since 2011, Ohio Edison contractors have removed more than 15,000 dead or infected ash trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer in northern and central Ohio, including almost 3,000 so far this year.
"Whether it's a special emphasis on removing endangered ash trees, or completing our regular program, outages from trees and limbs falling into our lines have decreased over the last several years," said Randall A. Frame, regional president, Ohio Edison. "Between 2009 and 2013, our trimming program resulted in about a 41 percent reduction in tree-related outages. By continuing this successful program, our goal is to reduce outages and enhance service reliability even more by protecting our wires and other infrastructure from tree-related damage."
During the next three months, Ohio Edison will be conducting tree trimming work in the following communities: Akron, Andover, Ashland, Austintown, Barberton, Bath Township, Berlin Center, Brimfield, Brunswick, Campbell, Catawba, Elyria, Enon, Fairborn, Girard, Green, Hinckley, Hubbard, Kent, Lakeside-Marblehead, Lake Milton, Liberty, Lisbon, London, Lowellville, Massillon, McDonald, Medina, Norton, Poland, Port Clinton, Ravenna, Rootstown, South Vienna, Springfield, Uniontown, Warren, and Youngstown.
The tree trimming is done on a four-year cycle. Vegetation is inspected and trees are pruned in a manner that helps maintain the health of the tree while also maintaining safe and reliable electric service for customers. In some cases, trees that are considered to present a danger or are diseased may be removed.
As part of its notification process, Ohio Edison works with municipalities to inform them of tree trimming schedules. In addition, customers living in areas along company rights-of-way also are notified prior to vegetation management work being done.
All tree trimming work is conducted to national standards by Ohio Edison's certified forestry contractors, including: Asplundh Tree Expert Company; Davey Tree Expert Company; Nelson Tree Service Inc.; and Wright Tree Service.
