Voith congratulates Missouri River Energy Services for breaking ground on the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project
Voith Hydro is supplying complete hydroelectric generating equipment for the project located near Pella, IA

Aug 13, 2014

Ground was officially broken on the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project (RRHP), which will retrofit the Lake Red Rock Dam near Pella, IA to provide up to 55MW of power during peak seasons. RRHP is being built by Missouri River Energy Services, and Voith will supply the turbines, generators, and associated controls that will help provide power for an estimated 18,000 homes and businesses. The project has a target completion date of 2018.

"Voith Hydro is very excited to be a part of the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project, and we look forward to continuing to work with the great team at Missouri River Energy Services over the coming years," said Voith Hydro's Director of Sales and Marketing, Carl Atkinson, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony. "By harnessing renewable energy at a previously non-powered Army Corps of Engineers dam, RRHP is providing a strong example for future development of our water resources."

Lake Red Rock is an Army Corps of Engineers facility currently used primarily for flood control and recreation. RRHP will retrofit the dam to provide clean and affordable power to Missouri River Energy Services' 61 municipal customers across Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The project was added to the Federal Infrastructure Permitting dashboard, which is designed to expedite critical infrastructure projects.

Dignitaries who spoke at the event included Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) Jo-Ellen Darcy, Iowa Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, and U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack.

Along with generators, Voith Hydro is manufacturing and supplying two vertical Kaplan type turbines and the control systems including static exciters, digital governors, and unit and plant controls for the project.

The Importance of Hydropower

Hydropower is the largest, oldest and also most reliable form of energy generation. Worldwide it makes an indispensible contribution to stable power supplies and hence to economic and social development - both in industrial countries and emerging markets. At the same time, hydropower significantly contributes to climate-protecting energy generation. Voith has been a leading supplier of this technology since the early beginning, and continuously develops it further.
