Co-ops Support LIHEAP Action Day
National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) CEO Jim Matheson issued the following statement declaring co-ops' support for LIHEAP Action Day. LIHEAP is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides those in need with assistance paying their home heating and cooling bills.
"Since 1981, LIHEAP has helped millions of Americans in tough circumstances pay their energy bills by supplying critical, short-term aid," said Matheson. "Located in the communities they serve, co-ops are acutely aware of LIHEAP's importance for people struggling to pay their energy bills. America's electric co-ops serve 93 percent of the nation's persistent poverty counties. On behalf of millions of co-op consumers in need, co-ops urge Congress to provide increased funding for the LIHEAP program."
Supporting LIHEAP aligns with one of the cooperatives' core principles: concern for community. Co-ops seek to strengthen the local economy and improve their members' quality of life through a number of programs, including LIHEAP.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is the national service organization that represents the nation's more than 900 private, not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide service to 42 million people in 47 states.
