Eversource Contribution Supports Boys and Girls Club Summer Program
Scholarship funds help families access quality childcare

May 15, 2017

As part of Eversource's ongoing commitment to supporting the vital organizations throughout New Hampshire that provide important services to children and families, the company is thrilled to announce a contribution to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry. The funds will be used to support the non-profit's summer camp scholarships.

"Each summer, we provide a fun, safe environment for hundreds of children throughout southern New Hampshire at a cost that is affordable to families," said Art McLean, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club. "This contribution will help ensure families who are unable to afford the full costs of the program will be able to secure high quality childcare for their children during the summer months when school is out."

Children who participate in the summer camp program enjoy a wide variety of activities including sports, water games, open gym, arts and crafts, computer time, managing a vegetable garden with the Derry Garden Club, and cooking programs, to name a few. Additionally, the students enjoy field trips to a ropes course, waterpark, and the movies.

"My favorite part of summer camp is getting to go on all the different field trips," said Kiah Beary, 10, a 4th grader at Derry Village School, who has been attending the summer program since 1st grade. "I like that we're always doing something different. I like working in the garden-I love weeding. We get to eat everything we grow, and the cooking classes are fun."

McLean said the costs of childcare are a burden for many local families, and the mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to provide a nurturing environment that allows all children to reach their full potential, regardless of a family's ability to pay for the programs. The contribution from Eversource will fund scholarships that help ensure more than six children are able to attend the summer program.

"The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry is a highly respected organization, which is strengthening the community by ensuring a bright future for children here in New Hampshire," said Eversource Community Relations Specialist Elizabeth LaRocca, who recently presented the contribution to McLean. "Eversource is committed to being a good neighbor and will continue to invest in programs, like this summer camp, that assist hardworking families in the communities we serve."
