The System Protection & Control Technician reports to the Supervisor-Transmission Relay Construction & Maintenance and is expected to be proficient in the calibration, installation, maintenance, and operation of the following: Protective relays and associated equipment which will ensure the efficient, safe, reliable, and NERC Reliability Standards compliant operation of Duke generating plants and transmission networks.
This position is responsible for performing work involving an extremely high degree of complexity, including troubleshooting, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and maintaining components of protective relay systems (microprocessor and electro-mechanical); substation and electric utility protection systems; station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
The System Protection and Control Technician is responsible for:
- Reading, correcting and properly interpreting substation drawings (e.g., single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings).
- This position will respond to power system emergencies and has an afterhours system support-on-call responsibility.
- Write procedures and/or test plans in support of maintenance and construction activities.
- Properly maintain tools ,test equipment and vehicles
- Performs switching and tagging and obtain proper clearance on equipment for repair, maintenance, or construction work per procedure
- Performs all duties in a safe manner complying with all safety and operational procedures. May work in areas requiring caution and use of safety devices.
Technician Operation Selection System (TECH) aptitude testing is required for this position.
Basic Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED
- 5 plus years of Protective Relaying Technician experience working with Distribution, Transmission or Generation Protection Relays.
- Valid driver's license required
Desired Qualifications:
- Two-year technical degree or completion of apprentice program is highly desirable
- SCADA maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting experience desired
