Description
Southern Power Company (SPC) and its subsidiaries own or have the right to own 47 facilities in eleven states, with 12,800 MW of generating capacity operating or under development in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas. The Wholesale Marketing Analyst position is responsible for providing commercial analytics and reporting on the performance of Southern Power's gas and renewable fleet as well as Southern Power's market optimization and trading efforts. In particular, this position will work with analysts throughout CO&T to optimize revenue and profit opportunities by streamlining existing data streams, reports, analysis and decision-making tools. The analyst must understand, analyze, and effectively communicate the effects of market dynamics and market structure on the commercial terms of existing and potential PPAs.

This position works closely with customers, business developers, generation support, market representatives, and other organizations within SPC and SPC Technology.

Major Job Responsibilities Include

  • Formulating best practices within CO&T to develop and analyze information that assists traders and analysts with decision making, market optimization, and PPA contract optimization
  • Developing Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for optimizing both renewable and gas assets and market performance
  • Developing reports and metrics which will be shared with SPC management and executives
  • Coordinating with Southern Power's Technology Support organization to identify and implement new data feeds and enterprise technology solutions
  • Developing dashboards and visualizations that enable CO&T analysts and traders to optimize decision making in near real time to daily timeframes
  • Developing trading strategies for minimizing asset and contract risk or losses (e.g. basis/congestion risk, negative pricing) and optimizing asset profit
  • Working with CO&T leadership to advance next-generation data analytics and reporting tools

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • Bachelors degree required; degree in technical field such as engineering, finance, mathematics, operations research, or equivalent is strongly preferred
  • An advanced degree in these areas or related field is desired

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to convert data into meaningful and actionable reports successfully communicating information to peers and management
  • Creative thinking, with a focus on finding optimal solutions for complex issues across various markets, technologies, and contract structures
  • Working knowledge of power production cost and dispatch, principles of financial evaluations, complex contract interpretations, real time operations, generation technologies, and environmental attributes (such as RECs) is highly desired
  • Knowledge of wholesale power markets (such as CAISO, ERCOT, SPP), FERC policies, transmission access (scheduling, point of delivery, curtailment), trading and hedging strategies is desired
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Business Intelligence tools such as PowerBI and Tableau
  • Strong analytical skills, interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications skills
  • Successfully manage numerous tasks and priorities in a dynamic, open trading floor environment
