The principal business of the Corporation and its subsidiaries is the distribution of electricity by Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited. Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited owns and operates an electricity distribution system, which delivers electricity to approximately 761,000 customers located in Toronto. It is the largest municipal electricity distribution company in Canada and distributes approximately 19% of the electricity consumed in the province of Ontario.

Engineering Technologist

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Prepare, create or modify site-specific single line and three line diagrams, AC/DC electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, panel layouts, mechanical drawings and logic diagrams
  • Assemble bills of material, cable schedules
  • Develop cable raceway, supporting and routing layouts
  • Perform routine engineering calculations
  • Select or verify adequately rated station equipment or components, including appropriate cable/wire ampacities
  • Ensure design compliance with all applicable code, industry standards, Toronto Hydro construction standards, design guidelines and utility best practice
  • Incorporate failsafe practices and operational safety requirements into all designs
  • Update records with as-built construction drawings
  • Create unique drawings for equipment installations where none exist based on photographs, field sketches and/or tracing of circuits
  • Escalate design issues to Professional Engineers for review and direction
  • Create purchase requisitions and assist procurement staff in the management of material acquisitions
  • Support Standards to standardization and stock code commonly used materials
  • Prepare and assemble capital construction packages, including: all required drawings, work instructions, planning documentation, and regulatory approvals, where required
  • Conduct routine field trips in order to: verify or evaluate the condition/state of assets; to determine the feasibility of designs; to take detailed measurements; to collect nameplate data or equipment settings; and to provide technical field support to operations staff
  • Assist in the review of customer designs, plans, drawings, surveys, studies and/or calculations
  • Support Professional Engineers with: detailed technical studies and/or calculations; preparation of cost estimates; the creation of equipment specifications and installation standards; requests for quotation; evaluation of new equipment; the creation of new design processes, operational procedures and safe work practices
  • Help coordinate construction projects - liaise, consult and communicate with key project stakeholders, including: contractors, customers, equipment suppliers, and other utilities
  • Take the lead in running small projects as the assigned project manager
  • Address internal and external inquiries and complaints
  • Input, update or verify various databases or programs
  • Compile and summarize statistical reports
  • Inspect, investigate, analyze and make recommendations to revise or improve construction standards, specifications, design and/or performance
  • Perform clerical and/or administrative functions associated with the position
  • Operate a vehicle requiring a class G license and associated equipment related to the position
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • CET designation preferred
  • Demonstrated competence in computer drafting using Microstation and/or AutoCAD
  • Ability to scale drawings & visualize 3D objects/cross-sections in 2D
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Project and Visio
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in the planning, design, construction, testing, commissioning, operation and/or maintenance of high voltage substations. Comparable experience with industrial automation or control systems design may be considered in lieu of the above
  • Thorough understanding of station low voltage control circuit design, and grounding and bonding requirements
  • Valid Class G' Drivers license in the Province of Ontario
  • General knowledge of protection and control concepts
  • Familiarity with various station equipment, including: switchgear; circuit breakers; protection relays; power transformers; DC systems;  SCADA systems; RTUs; Data Concentrators; local HMIs; station network equipment, topologies and various communication systems.
  • Ability to look-up and correctly interpret equipment manufacturer's installation instructions
  • General knowledge of overhead and underground distribution system design
  • Knowledge of, and proficient in the use and application of: the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the National Electrical Safety Code, the Ontario Building Code, the Ontario Fire Code and relevant industry standards including CSA, IEEE, IEC, ANSI and NEMA.
  • Experience using ERP systems such as Ellipse and/or SAP
  • Demonstrated competence in project management, time management, equipment procurement and construction coordination activities
  • Experience programming protection relays considered an asset
