General Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Manager - Technical Support, the position will be accountable for the following:

  • Provide engineering design and technical support to Distribution Lines, Planning and other lines of businesses (as required) to ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of HONI's Distribution assets.
  • Develop, review and approve standards and designs to meet requirements and ensure all applicable codes and government regulations are followed including compliance to national standards, safety policies and regulations, reliability and operational standards and other applicable requirements.
  • Provide technical advice, direction and related support services to Distribution Lines, Forestry and Planning, and Work Methods staff on design, unforeseen issues, processes, technical specifications and requirements around operation, maintenance and limitations of the Distribution system.
  • Maintain an awareness of technological advances in work tools, equipment, processes, databases and practices to enhance work management and execution.
  • Assist in the establishment, interpretation and promote the understanding of policies, standards and processes.
  • Provide strategic advice to Distribution Lines and Planning staff, in such matters as innovation. 
  • Work with project teams, technical specialists (internal and external) and suppliers to analyze designs and material requirements, prepare written reports, make recommendations for new or revised programs/projects.
  • Act as the Technical Authority for assigned portfolio(s) and ensure only qualified tools, instruments and equipment are approved. The accountability includes evaluate specification, implement field trial, assess efficiency and provide recommendation for Management approval.
  • Interact with external standard and research and development organizations, integrate best practices, and incorporate suitable requirements in design standards and material specifications.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of processes, practices and design guidelines.
  • Provide an overview for new equipment and material integration and Job Safety Analysis.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Distribution systems from an electrical engineering's perspectives (Materials, life cycle design/cost, standards, sustainment development, etc.) and operating characteristics.
  • Strong customer orientation and demonstrated ability to work with customers & co-workers.
  • Strong project and time management skills and ability to negotiate and influence others in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Distribution Lines and Planning processes, work practices, work programs, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated the ability to take initiative within their team.
  • Requires experience in standards development, review and approval.
  • Requires extensive study and analysis of situations based on background experience to reach conclusions that are sound and acceptable.
  • Ability to undertake in depth technical studies with minimal guidance and subject matter expert support. 
  • Requires experience in working effectively with a wide range of people as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Transmission systems (Lines) from an electrical engineering's perspectives (Materials, life cycle design/cost, standards, sustainment development, etc.) and operating characteristics is an asset.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills is desirable.
  • Ability to conduct failure investigations and TapRoot analysis is an asset.
  • Ontario Regulation 22/04 knowledge is an asset.

Essential Competencies:

  • Must have a sound knowledge of designs, standards and technical requirements & specifications related to Distribution systems.
  • Must have solid knowledge of electric utility practices and operation of Transmission and Distribution networks.
  • Requires a proficient knowledge of English including written and verbal communication skills to be able to effectively prepare written reports, chair meetings, interact with customers and deliver presentations.
  • Must have University training in Electrical/Structural/Mechanical Engineering and possess a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) license in the province of Ontario.
  • Must have a solid working knowledge of Distribution Lines & Planning processes, work practices, work programs, and reporting activities.
  • Must have a sound knowledge of engineering principles and ability to apply these.
  • Must have experience with technology especially related to computer, Distribution/Transmission equipment, data collection, databases and reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of designs, standards and technical requirements & specifications related to Transmission systems is an asset.
  • Should have experience in planning, cost monitoring, project management & control, financial assessments & analysis.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Work experience of over 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience
