Description

The position will be responsible for leading Talen Energy's Environmental Compliance Support for its eastern power plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. The role will be part of Talen's Environmental Management division, which is a corporate group that oversees and supports environmental matters throughout the company. The successful candidate will lead and manage a centralized team of environmental professionals, and report to Talen's Senior Director of Environmental Management. To be successful, the position requires demonstrated capabilities to execute and support environmental compliance activities covering primarily water and air medias. In addition, success will depend on the ability to lead and manage a team, work successfully in partnership with plant managers and environmental managers at each plant, and work cross-functionally inside the Company and externally with environmental agencies and consultants. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to adapt are required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned team of environmental compliance professionals to successfully execute in a timely manner compliance support tasks delegated by the plant sites or the Corporate environmental group.

  • Support plants as defined with environmental compliance activities, including preparing and submitting required air, water and/or waste reports and permit applications.

  • Provide a QA/QC review of key environmental applications and reports.

  • Work closely with power plants to complete on-time compliance activities.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact to assist plants with environmental activities. Given the 24/7 operations of power plants, after-hours or weekend communications may occur from time-to-time.

  • Analyze power plant data to respond to requests, support strategy development and/or for inclusion in required environmental permits or reports. 

  • Coordinate, as needed, with Talen's other environmental and business professionals to support compliance activities and to keep the business informed of key developments.

  • Establish and/or maintain defined relationships with federal or state agencies, through calls, meetings, and key on-site inspections. Primary states of operation are Pennsylvania and Maryland.

  • Manage environmental compliance support vendors and consultants to assist with plant or corporate duties.

  • Arrange or provide training as required for plant sites on various environmental topics.

  • Provide support on environmental audits, including attending audits as required and supporting audit finding closeout in a timely manner.

  • Maintain environmental records generated by the centralized compliance group.

  • Mentor environmental professionals in the Department and at the plants, as assigned or required.

  • Manage department budget consisting primarily of employee expenses and consultant fees.

  • Assist plants with environmental obligation tracking and management to ensure on-time completion.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time, primarily to visit plant sites or agencies.

  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Base Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience. Appropriate fields of study include engineering (environmental, chemical, mechanical, etc.) or environmental sciences.  Equivalent work experience includes field assignments and environmental compliance roles.

  • Minimum 3 years managing employees, preferably environmental professionals.

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and permitting requirements affecting power plant operations including air pollutants, air toxics, greenhouse gases, stack testing, continuous emission monitoring systems, water quality, wastewater discharge requirements, drinking water standards, water consumption and use, storm water management, and oil management/spill response.

  • Experience in wastewater discharge, NPDES permitting, drinking water standards, water quality and/or water use and consumption.

  • Strong leadership skills and independence necessary to develop, implement and administer complex environmental compliance programs.

  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal.

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with others and work cross-functionally to deliver results.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with air compliance and Title V permits.

  • Environmental experience in Pennsylvania and Maryland
