Description

The Manager, Distribution Grid Operations is responsible for leading 24/7/365 operation of the Toronto Hydro electrical distribution system, including system monitoring and control, emergency response, outage restoration, event prioritization, administration of work protection, coordination with field resources and interfacing with interconnected stakeholders (e.g. Hydro One, the IESO and large customers). The successful applicant will directly oversee a team of Power System Controllers in the execution of these duties, as well as lead and/or providing subject matter expertise for the successful execution of various organizational or departmental projects.  The Manager works a rotating schedule of up to 12 hours shifts to provide 24/7/365 coverage. S/he provides direction, technical guidance and mentorship to staff and other organizational stakeholders. The Manager may also be assigned to lead functions supporting the Control Centre. This includes work request scheduling, third party coordination and/or design review.

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Supervises, coaches, develops and trains Distribution Grid Operations employees.                          
  • Manages employee safety, attendance and performance.
  • Provides oversight and manages day-to-day operations and department activities.
  • Manages the preparation and execution of switching orders, work protection documentation, safety documents, hold-offs and power restoration following outages.
  • Provides regular communications and reporting regarding system conditions and events to internal stakeholders and Senior Management.
  • Leads and participates in the development, management and implementation of processes, tools and technology in an effort to continuously improve business processes and enhance safety, reliability, productivity and customer service performance.
  • Provides technical guidance and makes decisions on work coordination and prioritization to support and ensure the safe and reliable distribution of power to customers.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders on technical, operational and event management issues.
  • Leads the review of power system events to ensure "closed loop" management response. Includes review and investigation of power system event analytics, resourcing and work prioritization.
  • Manages, investigates and resolves escalated internal and external customer issues related to power system events, customer requests, service disconnects, streetlighting requests, etc.
  • Performs analysis on departmental or divisional measures as required to mitigate and close performance gaps.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate Degree/Diploma in Electrical Engineering preferred or relevant experience as a Power System Controller Journeyperson,  MEARIE Operator or equivalent

  • Five (5) years' progressive senior technical, project/supervisory leadership experience; direct people leadership experience preferred
  • Five (5) years' experience working in an operations or technical environment related to the electricity distribution (preferred) 
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T), Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or equivalent preferred
  • Power System Controller Journeyperson, MEARIE Operator or equivalent preferred
  • NERC System Operator Certification is an asset
  • Experience working in a unionized environment (preferred)
  • Specific training, knowledge, and understanding of Control Centre operations is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety, electrical, work protection codes and environmental legislation, regulations and practices
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical overhead and underground systems, operating practices standards, equipment, materials and engineering records systems
  • Knowledge of emergency management practices
  • Experience using various tools and applications including safety performance tracking systems, accident/incident investigation techniques, work management and general office automation tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety, electrical and environmental legislation and regulations
  • Familiar with reading electrical drawings, work protection codes, feeder/operating prints, overhead distribution system, underground distribution system, work practices and standards
  • Strong leadership skills; possesses a sense of mission with high priority for safety and results
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to interrupt complex engineering to make operational decisions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong project management skills
