Nearly half of the single-family homes on Oahu now have rooftop solar systems, highlighting Hawaiian Electric's nation-leading effort to bring more customer-sited renewable energy onto the grid.
The number of grid-connected solar systems across the five islands served by Hawaiian Electric rose to 118,841 at the end of September. The increase was the largest on Oahu where an estimated 49% of all single-family homes now have rooftop solar systems. In Maui County the share is 47% and on Hawaii Island it's 30%. Systemwide, 45% of single-family homes served by the company have solar systems.
"It's heartening to see so many of our customers achieve their goal of installing a rooftop solar system," said Kaiulani Shinsato, Hawaiian Electric Customer Energy Resources co-director. "Hawaiian Electric's rates have fallen to the lowest level since 2022, and rooftop solar and battery storage systems have helped customers further manage their energy costs and see greater bill stability, reinforcing the value of customer-sited renewables for customers and as part of our generation mix."
The percentage of Hawaiian Electric residential customers with solar systems has more than doubled over the last decade. The U.S. Energy Information Agency regularly cites Hawaii as the nation's leader in rooftop solar penetration on a per capita basis.
Hawaiian Electric is continually upgrading its suite of customer-friendly solar programs to add more renewable energy to the grid in a fair and sustainable way. Smart Renewable Energy is the latest iteration of that effort. More information about Smart Renewable Energy is available at hawaiianelectric.com/smartprograms.
Hawaiian Electric is just one of the players helping customers install rooftop solar systems. Solar contractors and local government planning and permitting departments also play a key role in working with customers to navigate the process of installing a solar system.
