PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the utility trainee, performs the following functions: digs and backfills, erects steel framework and secondary buses in vaults, installs pole riser cables and their terminations, installs cable supports in manholes and vaults, installs transformers, MVIs and VFIs and various UG switches, performs less complex primary cable splices, and more complex splices under guidance, splices energized secondary cables up to 480 V. Works as the third member of an AC Network inspection and maintenance crew. Under guidance inspects, tests and repairs AC network facilities. Carries tools, materials, and equipment between truck and manholes or poles. Assembles materials and equipment. Hoists supplies to other crew members in aerial lifts and lowers equipment into manholes and vaults. Climbs (and works from) poles, ladders and similar structures. Drives any type of splicing or pulling truck. Operates boom, aerial bucket lift, all cable installing equipment, forklift, backhoe and auxiliary power equipment. Tows various types of trailers. Maintains adequate truck stock of tools and materials. Inspects tools periodically to ensure that they are in good operating condition. Exchanges worn or defective tools. Prepares time sheets and various forms, for approval by crew leader or supervisor. Sets up work area protection in accordance with OSHA and Company regulations. Operates pump, drill, winch, generator, air compressor, air hammer, voltmeter, ammeter, hydraulic tools, and powered equipment on various types of trailers, (e.g., Reel King and Cable truck ). Is required to work during emergencies. Comprises a job family with Cable Splicer Trainee. Is subject to shift work. Willingness to work under adverse conditions of weather, vehicular traffic and energized electric cables. This position is considered a 'safety-sensitive' function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must successfully complete the training for Cable Splicer Trainee, which is approximately 18 months. May be required to respond to emergency events.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Subject to shift work. Physical ability to perform job duties.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Test Battery.
  • Valid Level I authorization or appropriate Commercial Driver's License, and ability to meet Company driving standards.
  • Ability to operate power equipment, drive trucks, install electrical equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime, if and when required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
