Summary 

This posting is for a Fire Protection Engineer who will support the fleet regulatory programs team at a Duke Nuclear Station at the Engineer I or Engineer II level.  The fleet Regulatory Programs team provides Fire Protection Program coverage at the sites within the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet.   

  • The Nuclear Engineer I is an entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

  • The Nuclear Engineer II is an intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Hybrid Mobility Classification

Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility

Responsibilities 

  • Provide NFPA code and program expertise. Ensure site meets program compliance with codes, standards, fleet/site procedures and regulations. 

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems within the program. 

  • Prepare and support NRC/INPO/NEIL inspections. 

  • Monitor the testing and performance of the fire protection detection and protection systems 

  • Review engineering changes for accuracy, program impact, and functional testing. 

  • Develop and/or provide technical support in the development of surveillance testing, fire protection pre-plans, and impairment monitoring and reporting processes. 

  • Accurately communicate technical issues concisely in oral and written communication. 

  • Provide field support to maintenance, operations and site services for Fire Protection related issues that cannot be resolved by the site Fire Marshall. 

  • Review and respond to fleet/industry OE

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally. 

Basic/Required Qualifications for Nuclear Engineer I

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program 

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering 

Basic/Required Qualifications for Nuclear Engineer II

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program 

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering 

  • 2 years of engineering experience. 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program 

  • Some fire protection experience

  • Nuclear plant experience 

  • Membership in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE)  

  • Ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities 

  • Calculations Qualification

  • Experience with general computer skills including Windows, e-mail, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) 

  • Able to program in Python and similar programs

Specific Requirements 

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance. 

  • Able to work both in field and office environment.

  • Able to work with diverse employees and stakeholders

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty. 

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed 

  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires. 

  • Occasional overnight travel. 

Specific Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
